Drain-Waste-Vent Systems

Every fixture that uses water—sinks, toilets, showers, outdoor kitchens—requires a complete drain-waste-vent (DWV) system. Waste lines carry used water to the sewer or septic system. Vent lines extend through the roof to equalize pressure and prevent siphoning of trap seals. Without proper venting, drains run slowly, fixtures gurgle, and sewer gases can enter living spaces. Chicago building code specifies exact pipe sizes, slopes, and fixture heights that must be followed for safe, functional plumbing.

Roof deck plumbing presents unique challenges: running supply and drain lines through finished spaces, protecting pipes from freeze damage in Chicago winters, and coordinating with waterproofing membranes. We route plumbing through interior chases where possible, insulate exposed runs, and install proper cleanouts for future maintenance access. For outdoor sinks and showers, we design systems that can be winterized or use self-draining configurations.
