Downtown, Chicago · 2020
Excessive sun exposure rendered this condo association roof deck unusable during Chicago outdoor season. Their board commissioned us to design, engineer and build a shade structure that would make their once-underused amenity space the building residents' destination of choice.
The design centers on a louvered pergola shade structure with an aluminum finish that provides functional shade through adjustable slats while requiring minimal maintenance. Low-voltage and cafe lighting extends the usable hours into evening, creating a comfortable atmosphere for after-work relaxation.
Screening elements were incorporated to conceal unsightly mechanical utilities, maintaining the clean aesthetic. The project required Chicago Landmarks Commission approval and careful window load engineering to ensure structural integrity while preserving the building character.
