Bat-Caves, Man-Caves, and now Woman-Caves!? Some call it a 'Babe-Cave', others a 'She-Shed' but here at the Urban Wildlife we have coined the term 'Woman-Cave' to describe the area of the home dedicated to the woman of the house which is seemingly a must in today's world of constant distractions.
I hear guys spend a lot of time talking about their mancave: the beer-fridge, NFL ticket, and the giant TV. While that sounds really awesome, some people are less entertained with, well, entertainment. These certain people enjoy the simpler things in life: a cozy blanket, the scent of a candle, and a really good podcast. A quiet place to escape to is extremely important for the homemaker, the business woman, or the new parent. This place can be a guest bedroom, a closet, a nook/cranny, or a backyard shed. While the mancave gives the impression of a party destination, the woman cave is about isolating the outside world and creating a much simpler space where one can find peace and serenity. Sometimes that's what people need.
Below are five guiding principles to help create your very own personal retreat.
1. Keep it Classy
While your first instinct might be to pile the room with your favorite dolls from childhood, consider leaving these out. You are the type of person that doesn't need distraction. While fun to reminisce, it's probably best to keep it classy and adult. Look for quality materials and sophisticated craftsmanship.
2. Keep it Light
Go with a neutral palette: a light gray, a soft blue, a beige, or everyone's favorite – white! Staying away from busy colors will help settle your mind. Another tip: make sure you have some natural light. Even a small window can make a big difference to your mood.
3. Keep it Fresh
Plants and flowers will add personality to any room without having to add clutter. Keeping them alive by a little bit of exposure to natural light (hopefully you have the window). Did you also know plants give off oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide? This may also help you relax.
4. Keep Hanging in there
I've always wanted a room that had a bed on chains or a hammock as a couch. Not only do hanging beds look awesome but they allow you to sway side to side. Think about it: the fetal position, the swing at the park, and how a baby sleeps in the womb. I feel relaxed just thinking about it.
5. Keep it Soft
This may be the most important principle of all. Throw blankets, rugs, and pillows help out quite a bit. If done correctly, the softness should envelope you as soon as you walk into the room. The feeling should be sort of like a warm hug. Do a survey of your furniture and linen. Maybe time for an upgrade?
